Balloon sinuplasty is a novel technique in endoscopic sinus surgery that uses a minimally-invasive approach to clear and open blocked sinuses that cause sinusitis symptoms. In many patients, the procedure can be performed under a local anesthetic in the office, with no need to go to the hospital.
Dr. Nachlas was the first surgeon in the United States to perform in-office computer guided balloon sinuplasty. This is a procedure in which the computer guides the tip of the balloon into the affected sinus, inflates it, deflates it, and removes it. This simple in-office procedure is done under local anesthesia and can be used to relieve sinus pressure, sinus congestion, nasal obstruction, headaches and other symptoms of chronic sinusitis (see below). Dr. Nachlas was also the first surgeon in the United States to perform in-office computer guided balloon sinuplasty with minimally invasive removal of sinus polyps. This procedure, which pioneered in 2014, has enabled Dr. Nachlas to greatly expand the scope of nasal and sinus ailments that can successfully be treated in the office setting.
WHAT SYMPTOMS DOES BALLOON SINUPLASTY TREAT AT DR. NACHLAS’S BOCA RATON LOCATION?
Balloon sinuplasty is used to treat chronic sinusitis symptoms which frequently occur in South Florida, including:
- face pain
- face pressure
- chronic sinus headaches
- chronic discharge from the nose or eyes
- loss of the sense of smell
- difficulty breathing through the nose
- tenderness and swelling around the nose, forehead and eyes
- sore throat (pharyngitis)
- bad breath (halitosis)
- sleep problems caused by difficulty breathing
Multiple clinical studies have confirmed that balloon sinuplasty offers long-lasting relief from these symptoms by opening the sinus cavities, improving breathing and significantly reducing the likelihood of infection. For these reasons and more, patients travel from West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and across the United States to Dr. Nachlas in his Boca Raton medical practice for their sinus procedures.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY BALLOON SINUPLASTY PROCEDURE AT DR. NACHLAS’S BOCA RATON PRACTICE?
Although some patients might benefit from general anesthesia, many sinus procedures can be performed in Dr. Nachlas’s office under a local anesthetic in two hours or less. Baloon sinuplasty uses a small, flexible tube called a catheter to drain infected sinuses and gently expand the sinus cavity for improved breathing. The catheter contains a tiny, latex-free balloon that is deployed and expanded inside the sinus. As the balloon expands, it gently restructures the interior of the sinus cavity, widening the space without harming the sinus or removing any tissue. Once the sinus cavity is expanded, a sterile saline solution is sprayed into the sinus to clear out bacteria, pus and mucus and to help reduce inflammation of the sinus lining. Once the catheter is removed, the nasal cavity is packed with sterile gauze to enhance healing.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS LIKE FOR DR. NACHLAS’S BALLOON SINUPLASTY PATIENTS?
Most patients can expect to return to work and other regular activities within about two days of their balloon sinuplasty procedure. The effects of the sinus procedure are long-lasting and many patients will not require additional treatment. The use of balloon sinuplasty does not prevent patients from receiving other sinus treatments in the future.
CAN BALLOON SINUPLASTY BE COMBINED WITH OTHER FACIAL PLASTIC OR NOSE PROCEDURES
Yes; depending on a patient’s exam and consultation, Dr. Nachlas may suggest other options as part of a complete treatment approach aimed at achieving optimal health. As Dr. Nachlas is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, he performs rhinoplasty, face lifts and neck lifts, brow lifts, facial fillers and injectables like Botox, Juvederm, volume and more. IN-OFFICE BALLOON SINUPLASTY IN BOCA RATON
In-office balloon sinuplasty replaces many of the procedures traditionally performed in the hospital or outpatient setting. Balloon sinuplasty is performed under local anesthesia, takes less than 45 minutes, and recovery takes only a few days. Balloon sinuplasty is ideal for patients whose issues are limited to the sinuses, and for patients who don’t require extensive surgery for a deviated nasal septum (deviated nose) or external nasal repair. Balloon sinuplasty is covered by Medicare and most insurance companies. As one of the United States’ 3 original endoscopic sinus surgeons, Dr. Nachlas was also at the forefront of offering in-office balloon sinuplasty to the Boca Raton community. Nose surgery from Dr. Nachlas has proven to be the long-awaited solution for many sinus sufferers who responded poorly to conservative medical and allergic management.
OUTPATIENT BALLOON SINUPLASTY IN BOCA RATON
Outpatient balloon sinuplasty is performed at an accredited Boca Raton outpatient facility, the Boca Raton Outpatient Surgery & Laser Center. Dr. Nachlas performs balloon sinuplasty procedures there in situations in which his office is not the best option. One such situation is when other, more involved nasal issues need to be addressed, such as repair of external nasal issues or a difficult nasal septal deformity. Another reason for outpatient balloon sinuplasty is that some patients prefer to be asleep during the balloon sinuplasty surgery. Whether performed in the office or at the outpatient center, patients can be assured that both settings provide them with expert, caring treatment. Such world-class care fast-tracks balloon sinuplasty patients back to most activities just days after surgery, and to vigorous activity within a week or two.
